Renewed Persecution of Christians in Eritrea

by Release Eritrea

In a distressing development, several Christians have once again fallen victim to persecution in Eritrea. On the night of April 24th, individuals from Agordet, Barentu, and Tesennei were forcibly removed from their homes, believed to be members of the Evangelical faith. While the exact number remains uncertain, initial estimates suggest that more than 30 individuals have been apprehended.

This incident follows a similarly troubling pattern of resurgence in religious oppression in the country. On January 21st, 30 Christians were similarly detained and continue to languish in the confines of Mai Serewa prison. Furthermore, in March, three families from Asmara were also incarcerated in the same facility, adding to the growing tally of those unjustly detained.

Dr. Berhane Asmelash, director of the Christian charity, Release Eritrea, expressed profound sadness at the persistent persecution endured by Christians in Eritrea, spanning over two decades. Dr. Asmelash remarked, "It makes me sad to hear of the continuing persecution of Christians that has been ongoing for two decades now, I call for justice and I also call on all Christians to join us in praying for the persecuted church of Eritrea."

Release Eritrea urges the Eritrean government to uphold the fundamental rights of religious freedom and to release all those unjustly detained. We call upon the international community to condemn these violations and to advocate for the protection of religious minorities in Eritrea.
